About us: Book Summer is an online program designed to address an accelerating crisis among today’s tweens and teens – the precipitous drop in time spent reading. Indeed, many kids now do not read, at all, unless compelled to do so in school.
There is no reason why reading can’t be fun, interesting, and social. Starting or re-starting a pleasure reading habit will create a lifetime of enjoyment and build the skills (curiosity, patience, persistence, and language) for future creative and professional stimulation, growth and success.
This role will be critical in bringing the Book Summer experience to life. Moderators will….
• Guide a group of participant kids through the online summer reading program meeting with kids 1-1 regularly to match them to books of interest
• Check on their reading progress and guide group discussions in a “book club” format based on either reading the same book or different books on a similar topic.
• This is very much an early-stage start-up opportunity and so not only will Moderators be on the “front line” working with kids, but they will also act as a critical thought-partner, providing counsel, vision, and guidance on how to build and improve upon the Book Summer reading experience.
You are a trained education professional (or a student pursuing a degree in Education). A completed (or pursuit of) Bachelor’s degree in a relevant education-related discipline is required. You are passionate about books, kids’ reading, and education. You are excited by the idea of joining an early-stage start-up with potential but also limited resources and a great deal of ambiguity still to be addressed. And, you are excited at the idea of influencing and guiding the design and iteration of a program to get kids reading on their own.
Book Summer is an early-stage start-up. This is a full-time position for 10 weeks (Approximately June 1 to August 15) Compensation will be based on an hourly rate of $15 (higher is possible based on experience) and, as a start-up, we are not able to offer benefits as yet. However, as the organization grows we envision many roles developing with a full-time salary, benefits, and the potential for equity participation post-Pilot stage.
