Interested in teaching youth and community service in Hong Kong this summer? Apply to be a 2025 Summerbridge Hong Kong Student Teacher!
ABOUT SUMMERBRIDGE HONG KONG:
Founded in 1992, Summerbridge Hong Kong is a non-profit organization which creates unique educational opportunities for highly motivated, socioeconomically underprivileged secondary school students in Hong Kong. We provide comprehensive year-round programs to develop students’ English communication, self-confidence, and interest in the learning process through an intensive English Language Development curriculum, small class sizes, individual mentoring, and hands-on learning strategies. Each summer, the students are immersed in a five-week, English-only environment, in which they are taught and mentored by a motivated group of student teachers from local and overseas high schools and universities. The uniqueness and quality of the program results from our “students teaching students” model, which offers older students the opportunity to teach younger students in a safe, supportive, and diverse learning environment where young people are both the initiators and beneficiaries of the educational process.
ABOUT STUDENT TEACHERS – who they are & what they do:
Summerbridge student teachers are between the ages of 16 to 22 from high schools and universities around the world, such as the US, UK, Canada, and Hong Kong. They are a diverse group bringing a variety of talents and backgrounds to the program; some come with prior teaching experience while others teach for the first time. With the help and guidance from experienced Summerbridge teachers, student teachers commit to eight weeks of comprehensive teaching and community service, in which they complete a teacher training, create their own curriculum, teach their own classes, and evaluate student performance. Common to all student teachers is a commitment to both teaching and learning, and a willingness to work in a demanding yet highly rewarding environment that celebrates creativity, compassion, and meaningful human connections. Our teachers play an important role in creating a positive impact on youth, and inspiring our students to follow their dreams and believe that anything is possible.
Summerbridge student teachers in university will receive a stipend of $8,000 HKD for the summer. The purpose of the stipend is to reimburse student teachers for food and transportation costs incurred while working at Summerbridge. An airfare allowance and housing accommodation are provided to student teachers with relevant Summerbridge experience. That means if you have never previously taught at the Breakthrough/Summerbridge programs, you will need to sponsor your own plane tickets and housing accommodation; however, we will be able to offer you assistance to locate suitable housing. Please keep in mind that you may be able to apply for a scholarship/grant at your school that will cover these costs; many of our student teachers have successfully applied for such scholarships/grants in the past. Please check with the relevant office at your school for more details.
