Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a virtual intern on the Democracy and Government Reform team. The Democracy and Government Reform team is committed to developing policies and advancing a legislative agenda that strengthens our democracy and ensures that everyone has an equal voice in our democratic process. To achieve this, we are focused on winning structural reforms that flip the paradigm of our political system so that it focuses on everyday Americans instead of the wealthy and well-connected. We are also advancing critical reforms to our judicial and legal system that will increase professional and demographic diversity at the highest levels of the legal profession, protect civil rights, and broaden access to justice. All of this work will be undertaken while applying an explicit equity lens to our policy development that centers communities of color and other historically underrepresented communities.

This virtual intern will learn many of the basic skills it takes to be a policy professional at a progressive nonprofit.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct web-based research for working projects and preliminary research, including research on laws and policies affecting the team’s portfolio.
  • Draft memos, fact sheets, issue briefs, and talking points that compile and analyze data, original research, and analysis.
  • Research and maintain records of press coverage and other important metrics for the team’s work.
  • Attend virtual meetings, webinars, seminars, hearings, and lectures and report back takeaways.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, meetings, and conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Current pursuance of an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills.
  • Interest in and general understanding of issues in the democracy and/or courts policy space—including but not limited to voting rights, campaign finance, and judicial and legal policy issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability as a self-starter who takes initiative and seeks direction as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to diagnose problems and identify creative solutions.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.

American Progress interns are paid at the D.C. minimum wage rate of $15 per hour and receive paid time off for applicable holidays.
