Reports to: Associate Director for Policy, ImmigrationDepartment: ImmigrationPosition classification: InternshipSummaryAmerican Progress has an immediate opening for a virtual summer internship with the Immigration Policy team, which provides leadership on research, advocacy, policy, and communications in all aspects of immigration and refugee policy in the United States. The team crafts and supports positive immigration policies and refutes negative and biased anti-immigrant sentiment and policy. The Immigration Policy team works closely with a broad coalition of advocacy organizations as well as congressional and government offices to promote real solutions to the nation’s immigration challenges.The intern will learn many of the basic skills needed to be a policy professional at a progressive nonprofit and will be intimately involved in the day-to-day operations of the Immigration Policy team. They will provide research support on a variety of issues related to immigration in the United States, help craft messaging and advocacy positions for American Progress, track important stories, and assist with events and organizational tasksResponsibilities:Conceptualize, research, and draft columns, policy memos, and other materials to advance a specific immigration policy issue.Provide research and advocacy support as needed.Research and maintain records of press coverage and other important metrics for the team’s work.Draft tweets for the team’s Twitter account.Create, organize, and maintain accurate written and electronic files and databases.Provide logistical support for all staff meetings and events when needed.Occasionally draft and/or edit letters, invitations, and other documents.Perform other duties as assigned.Requirements and qualifications:Current pursuance of an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, or recent graduate.Excellent research, writing, and editing skills.Interest in immigration policy, advocacy, and communications.Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.Self-starter who takes initiative and seeks direction as needed.Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.Ability to diagnose problems and identify creative solutions.Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.American Progress interns are paid at the D.C. minimum wage rate of $15 per hour. Interns will receive paid time off for federal holidays.
