Position Details:

Witness to Mass Incarceration’s (WITNESS) voter registration initiative is designed to register incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people (FIP) to vote and to Get Out The Vote (GOTV). We have worked to register our FIP for several election cycles. We are looking to hire vote registration coordinators to work with our staff and interns in building our capacity to do in-person, phone banking, and texting voter registration. We prefer candidates based in NYC, but it’s not required.

Responsibilities and Expected Outcomes:

  • Organize and lead outreach events for the purpose of registering new incarcerated and formerly incarcerated voters
  • Organize and promote a social media campaign to encourage voter registration among incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people
  • Organize voter registration drives throughout the city, coordinating staff, interns, partners, and volunteers to execute successful events.
  • Coordinate pop-up events and in-person door-knocking

Qualifications, Credentials, and Technical Skills Required:

  • Experience in civic engagement
  • Excellent organizational skills required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail required
  • Ability and willingness to coordinate groups of volunteers/interns
  • Social media knowledge is required
  • Phone banking experience is a plus

Internships are available in the fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters.

Because this is an unpaid internship, Witness to Mass Incarceration is happy to provide recommendations or references for all interns. In terms of internship credit, some educational institutions require prior approval before the start of an internship. It is the responsibility of the student to check with their institution to be sure they meet any requirements before they accept a position.

About WITNESS:
Witness to Mass Incarceration (WITNESS) is dedicated to fostering economic liberation for formerly incarcerated individuals (FIP), system-impacted persons, LGBTQ+ youth, women, and the migrant community. We achieve this by creating a hub of excellence in entrepreneurship and innovation for these communities, providing comprehensive vocational training, social enterprise solutions, and robust support systems. Our mission is to cultivate economic independence, reduce recidivism, and nurture generational wealth, dismantling systemic barriers and advancing equality for all we serve.
