Internship Spotlight: Peace Boat USA

Current student, Ruth Ijomor, received a Career Center Internship Grant for her recent summer internship at Peace Boat USA. Ruth shared the following about being a summer intern:

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
I served as the video and communications team lead and worked on the reporting team and social media team. I mainly edited videos for the organizations’ various campaigns, showcases, and for social media use. I assisted in curating social media posts and well as writing reports on different events like the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the United Nations and other collaborations. I also served as a speaker at our HLPF side event on youth mobilization for climate action.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship through handshake.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I most enjoyed being able to have access to the United Nations and having a seat at the table during important discussions that affect my future.

What did you find challenging?
I found it challenging to network and put myself out there but with time I gradually developed those skills over the summer. Now I am confident in giving elevator pitches and explaining myself and my interests to others and concise and convincing way.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
I would advise someone who wants to make the most of an internship in New York is to explore everyday after work. Don’t go from work, straight home. Explore, sightsee, and meet new people. The world is very beautiful.
