Job and Internship Search “How to” Guide

Job and internship searches can feel chaotic, time-consuming, and worrisome. These 6 steps will give you a structure to keep you focused and organized. Make sure you’re revisiting each step as you learn more about the industry you are hoping to work in, and make sure to schedule an appointment with an advisor who has a specialty in your desired area to build a personal strategy to go through these following steps.

Step 1: Know Your Direction

Your career journey requires a clear sense of direction before moving forward. While flexibility is important, focusing on key goals helps guide your path. Reflect on your interests, values, and the skills you enjoy or want to develop. Clarifying your direction will help focus your efforts and guide your next steps. Looking for help with this step? Step 2: Do Your Research

The more you know and understand about the industry you’re pursuing, the more successful your search will be. Learn everything you can about the direction you want to head in. Use resources like Handshake, LinkedIn, and the Tufts Career Center to explore job titles, skills, and qualifications. Read job description to gain an understanding of different roles, and what skills employers are looking for. Take note of typical job titles, common keywords, and qualifications. Deepen your knowledge by following industry organizations, industry blogs, and attending webinars. This kind of understanding will give you an edge as you customize your documents and build your professional network. Start your research by using the internet to learn more about jobs and industries using sites like The Occupational Outlook Handbook and by having Career Conversations.

Step 3: Connect to the Professional Community

Building a network is crucial. Engage with professionals and alumni to gain first-hand insights and advice. Attending events, having career conversations, and using professional platforms like LinkedIn and The Herd is part of your research, and will help you gain valuable insights into industries and roles of interests. These connections can often lead to mentorship opportunities, referrals, and insider knowledge about job openings. If you’re not sure how to begin making these connections, start with the following:

Step 4: Tailor Your Documents

Customize your application materials for each position you apply to. Start by carefully reviewing the job description, identifying key terms, industry buzzwords, and the qualifications. Use this information to align your documents with the role.

The goal is to show employers not just that you meet the requirements, but that you’re a perfect fit for their team. Tailored documents can make the difference between getting noticed or getting passed over, so take the time to customize each application thoughtfully.

5. Apply

Apply broadly to opportunities that align with your goals. The more positions you apply to, the higher your chances of landing interviews. However, managing multiple applications can be a challenge, so it’s important to stay organized. Make sure you are looking for jobs in multiple places like Handshake, LinkedIn, and industry-specific websites. Continue to connect with professionals – it’s a necessary way to learn industry specific resources and hear about opportunities you otherwise wouldn’t have found.

When applying, carefully follow each employer’s instructions. Pay close attention to required documents, file formats, and submission platforms. Double-check your application for accuracy, ensuring there are no typos or errors. Finally, don’t hesitate to follow up on your applications if you haven’t heard back after a reasonable period (2 weeks). A polite inquiry about the hiring timeline can demonstrate your enthusiasm and initiative.

6. Stay organized and Manage Your Stress

This is key during an internship or job search. Start by creating a timeline with deadlines for applications, follow-ups, and interviews. Use spreadsheets or apps to monitor your progress. Dedicate regular time to your search to maintain consistency without feeling overwhelmed.

To manage stress, practice self-care by taking breaks, staying active, and seeking support from friends, mentors, and the Tufts Career Center. Remember, the process takes time, and staying focused, proactive, and organized will help you navigate it more confidently. Set yourself up for success by going in with a realistic time frame – most searches take at least 4-6 months. Don’t expect this to come together without putting in the time or work.
