Internship Spotlight: Molecular Cardiology Research Institute

Current Tufts student Richard Wang shared the following about being a Summer Intern at the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, part of the Tufts Medical Center

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
I assisted with Dr. Chin and his team’s research on improving enzyme replacement therapy as a means to alleviate the symptoms of Barth Syndrome.

How did you find this internship?
I found Dr. Chin and his lab’s research actually from interviewing him for an on campus club activity, specifically Breakthrough, the undergraduate research journal.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed meeting new people and just doing work that reinforced my understanding of my biochemistry major.

What did you find challenging?
The most challenging thing for me was myself. I was not a very careful reader and made numerous simple mistakes at the very start of the internship. However, after this summer, I have definitely improved in being more careful when reading lab documents and performing the experiments.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. When encountering a problem, do your own research first and then ask questions, lots of them.
