Internship Spotlight: Albany Center Gallery

Current student Eliza Whalen shared the following about being an Intern at the Albany Center Gallery …

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
As an intern at the Albany Center Gallery, I communicated with local and regional artists to collect and organize documents and information in preparation for several exhibitions. I also worked with other staff to research, select, document, handle, and mount artwork for these exhibitions. I was responsible for creating graphics and press releases to advertise upcoming events, spotlight featured artists, and document past programming as well. As part of a longer-term project, I helped to scan and research slides and other archival materials in preparation for an exhibit celebrating the Gallery’s 45th anniversary. I also had the opportunity to assist with youth art programming, artist receptions, and tabling events to engage with the community.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship online, by researching local non-profit, community-based arts organizations.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed learning more about the people and places near where I grew up, and the opportunity to give back to the organizations supporting accessible arts and culture in Albany.

What did you find challenging?
Managing communication with hundreds of individuals (whether they be artists, co-workers, or members of other organizations) could be difficult at times. Thankfully, it was a good opportunity to improve my organizational skills – balancing emails, face-to-face discussions, and physical documents.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
Take every opportunity you can to meet new people in your field! I was lucky to have the chance to speak with a variety of artists, members of local non-profits, historians, and other individuals working in arts administration. I had some amazing conversations, and was provided with valuable insight into the fields I’m interested in.
