Internship Spotlight: Foreign Brief

Current student Justin Schuster shared the following about being an Intern at Foreign Brief …

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
At Foreign Brief, I had an internship as a graphic designer for the company’s video series: Week in Review. In this position is created motion graphics and map animations for the weekly video series and, throughout the summer, my roles expanded into editing audio and working on YouTube/Google SEO to maximize each video’s performance.

How did you find this internship?
I found the internship through the Tufts IR Newsletter, which frequently posts internship offerings.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
What I enjoyed most about this internship was the creative freedom with which my supervisors gave me. I’ve never had the opportunity before to work with such freedoms, and having the ability to break out of my comport zone creatively in video production was an incredibly enriching experience. These creative liberties partnered with the accountability of producing high quality content on a regular schedule helped me learn to push the boundaries of my production value.

What did you find challenging?
What challenged me the most was keeping morale high during periods of low views/low engagement on YouTube. During these times it was difficult to see that the hard work we were putting in on our end was not being picked up on the internet. However, throughout the summer, I found it important to persist through those times, and use them as learning opportunities.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
A position such as mine was an excellent opportunity to hone my skills in map animations and video production on a larger scale. I would advise that anyone going into a production internship to view such a position in a similar light: that each opportunity to produce new content is an opportunity to improve on you past work, which means growth happens more quickly.
