Internship Spotlight: Watertown Boys & Girls Club

Current student Juan Morris shared the following about being an Intern at Watertown Boys & Girls Club…

How did you find this internship?
I found it through the Portuguese Department at Tufts, with Professor Chaplin’s help.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I really enjoyed making connections with the immigrant Portuguese and Spanish-speaking communities of Watertown. It was really a pleasure to see that I could help parents and kids alike be in such a nation-wide and popular organization like the Boys and Girls Club without feeling left out and excluded because of a language barrier.

What did you find challenging?
I found it sometimes challenging to adjust the the ever changing tasks and expectations of the team as a whole especially when directly compared to the outlined tasks in my hiring contract and job description. However, I am grateful for the opportunity to grow as a professional in an environment that is always changing and where adaptability is key.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
As a language connections intern, it is critical to step out of your comfort zone and reach out to those in need of help relating to interpreting or translating, as it is often hard for these individuals to ask for help themselves.
