Internship Spotlight: Studio Ellias Kaleb

Current student Joao Medeiros shared the following about being an Studio Ellias Kaleb…

What did you do as an intern there?
I was a studio assistant.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship through a colleague of mine who works as a Public Relations Agent to the Studio. I chatted with him and said that I wanted to combine learning with volunteer work, he then suggested that I talk with Ellias (the designer and owner of the Studio). I got in touch, expressed my desire to learn more and to volunteer in the organizations the Studio took part. He liked my personality and portfolio, and I ended up getting the Job.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
The rush before a fashion show is unimaginable, but teaching kids who like me didn’t have access to art in their childhood was priceless. In addition to making beautiful garments, prepping for a fashion show, and experiencing the day-to-day of a fashion studio, volunteering at Favela Fashion (a volunteer program that aims to teach fashion skills kids from the favelas) was what I enjoyed the most. Seeing myself in those kids and being able to pass on the knowledge I have acquired at the “corporate” part of the internship was priceless.

What did you find challenging?
The location was particularly challenging – the studio was located in the historical center of São Paulo, one of the most dangerous parts of the city with a great activity of gangs, drug addicts, and robberies – getting there was particularly challenging, but we made arrangements so that it was possible for me to get there safely, which worked out well at the end.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
Enjoy each moment, be expansive, and be open to the opportunities that your internship might offer you, even though they might not seem ideal at the moment.
