Start by understanding that while the term nonprofits can be used in different contexts, there are many different kinds of nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits are mission-driven organizations dedicated to addressing a particular social issue or advocating for a cause. That can include human service organizations, hospitals, schools, museums, professional development organizations, think thanks, and more. While the term describes the type of organization, it does not necessary indicate the type of work someone could do. There are several types of roles that exist across nonprofit organizations. Some look similar to jobs found in the for-profit sector, and some are distinctive to the nonprofit sphere, or type of work done at individual organizations. This can be anything from accounting, to teaching, fundraising, grant writing, and counseling.
